Is this vegetable garden planning kit suitable for experienced gardeners?
Yes. Although the kit is accessible to beginners, it is also useful for experienced gardeners who want to bring a wealth of practical information together in one place. The vegetable cards cover growing methods, sowing and harvesting periods, growing conditions, frost tolerance, difficulty levels, pest susceptibility and more. They also include information on growing in pots and containers, including recommended container depth, making the kit useful for urban gardening as well.
Can I use this kit to plan crop rotation?
Yes. The vegetable family cards help you identify related crops, while the garden plan and tokens allow you to organise growing areas and think ahead about crop rotation.
What growing information is included on the vegetable cards?
Each card brings together practical information to help you plan and grow your vegetables, including:
-
Growing methods: sowing, planting and growing under cover, in a greenhouse or polytunnel.
- Sowing and harvesting periods: when to sow, plant and harvest each crop.
- Germination: ideal soil temperature and average germination time.
- Growing conditions: sun or partial shade, plant spacing and recommended container depth for growing in pots.
- Difficulty level: how much attention a crop needs and how susceptible it may be to pests.
-
Frost tolerance: whether a crop is frost-hardy, semi-hardy or frost-sensitive, with guidance on protection where appropriate.
The cards also provide practical advice on using greenhouses and polytunnels to protect young plants, extend the growing season and, with good ventilation, help reduce certain plant diseases. This makes the kit a handy reference for planning a vegetable garden throughout the year.
Can the kit be used for a group workshop?
Yes! The kit is ideal for group workshops with children or adults, in schools, community gardens, gardening clubs or other group settings. Its cards and planning tools encourage discussion and collaborative learning about vegetable families, sowing and planting times, and crop rotation.
